Your Poetic Pelvis: Awareness Through Movement

A 10 lesson Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement Series with Sarah Baumert

Over ten sessions, we will explore the pelvis and its connections to the whole self. Everything is related to even small changes in the pelvis. . .

The pelvis is a highly mobile structure, constantly responding to movement above and below it. Muscles that attach to the pelvis move in many directions, some connecting all the way to the upper spine, others crossing the hip joints and connecting into the legs all the way to the knees. This series will help you improve and clarify the fundamental movements of your pelvis for more effective action in your daily functions like walking, standing, and sitting. For those that recently took the pelvic floor series, this series can act like a Part 2, as we will continue to understand the pelvis through a whole new series of creative explorations (less focused on the pelvic floor itself).

A few lessons in this series will specifically reveal the important role of the buttocks! Your gluteus maximus is your largest muscle, more commonly known as the buttocks, the gluteus maximus plays a more important role than you may realize. As well as being a cushy place to sit on, it helps to keep your body upright and balanced and is where the power to propel one foot forward comes from.

These lessons will be helpful for athletes, dancers, musicians, and anyone interested in gaining an understanding of how harmonizing the pelvis with the whole self can create more ease-filled, elegant, and powerful movement.

“This poem accurately explains that a pelvis is not just a pelvis. It is so much more. It contains memories and experiences. It allows for the greatest forms of vulnerability, intimacy, and therefore potential pain.  It has the ability to bring forth life. It is linked to relationships and connected to our very breath. It is the stable foundation for all our upper and lower body movements. It truly is our center. We can do without our arms or legs, but we cannot function without a pelvis.”

What people are saying about Sarah's teaching and this course:

I had a moment where I was feeling being propelled by my pelvis and it was so distinct. Everything felt easier, just less effort. And I was shocked when I got to standing! It just felt like gravity in the room was different. Because that is always difficult and it was actually kind of easy in a way.

I haven’t done a lesson in a while and I felt like my body just immediately sunk into a relaxed state. I was able to stand up in a way that I have not been able to feel in a long time.

I especially like what you said at the beginning, to allow us to let go of expectations and to drop into a beginner’s mind. I’ve done enough Feldenkrais now that I know I am going to be prompted to try to feel certain things. But these ideas of being curious and letting things happen, and letting go of some control… Wow, I am always surprised at how much I need this every time. I appreciate these classes so much.

This is a non-judgemental, non-corrective, and liberating way to experience your body in motion. You will experience learning at your pace where noticing what makes you feel good is a priority. Notice what you are curious about, and recognize that experiencing pleasure and enjoyment in your body are measures of freedom. The lessons will be suitable for all levels, and will include a variety of positions, from lying on the back or side, to hands and knees, moving from sitting to lying, or rolling.
