Taking Play Seriously: A Fun Approach to Feldenkrais
An 8 lesson Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement Series with Sarah Baumert
In this series we will take a playful approach to the Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement way of learning. These lessons will explore some of the learning and movement principles you engaged with in your early years. By stimulating a sense of curiosity, impossibly seeming movements will start to feel more possible, possible movements more easy, and easy movements more fun! These lessons show how the Feldenkrais method is a refreshing combination of dynamic action and subtle clarity. The series will offer you novel, imaginative, creative ways to move your body. Engage with a wider view of the world and your potential to relate to it.
“Curiosity is a sign of health in human and animal. When learning, do not have any intention of being correct. Do not act well or nicely. Do not hurry, as this creates confusion. The ability to learn a skill such as right - left orientation needs the childish state of mind, that ability to play while learning, to pay attention, without intending to learn. It also needs among other requirements, the ability to feel differences; that is the ability to distinguish between one sensation and another very similar one. It needs attention with intention. The child does not exercise in the sense a grown up does, by repeating an action in order to improve it. The child's attention is directed by curiosity, which is innate in all living things. Repetition in a small child is more often due to the pleasure the act evokes and to its novelty, than to intent to improve. For successful learning, we must proceed at our own rate. Babies repeat each novel action clumsily at their own rate until they have enough of it.” - Moshe Feldenkrais

In Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement®, we explore how we can move with the smallest amount of effort. The smallest amount of effort or exertion will facilitate the maximum amount of sensory differentiation and thus make information available for new learning. Slow movements will facilitate a parasympathetic response, the rest and digest response of the nervous system.
We all have a brain that is plastic and capable of improvement and change. This is a non-judgemental, non-corrective, and liberating way to experience your body in motion.
